Is My House Haunted?

If you're reading this article it's probably because you at least have some reason to suspect that your personal property is haunted. Such suspicions could be warranted by the unexplainable sound of footsteps, odd smells, fleeting apparitions in your peripheral vision, the chills, cold spots being noticed in your home, items disappearing, varying temperatures from room to room, strange noises being heard, a feeling of uneasiness, your children making claims of witnessing strange individuals on your property or a whole host of other common experiences that happen in attributed haunted locations. You are probably wondering what you may have done to warrant these occurrences but you must first understand that you are not at fault.

A common misconception is that a death must occur on or near a piece of property for it to become haunted but this is often far from true. Another important fact to establish is that spirits or ghosts are not defined as same thing as demons when being discussed and should not be viewed with religious dogma or Hollywood created perceptions. There are several different types of hauntings and you can view our definitions for these here on our website. We have also published an article on methods people commonly seek out attempting to have spirits removed from their property. We have even talked about what you should not do.

Some of the methods available for finding out more about the history of your residence include a trip to your local city or town archives collection. There is an excellent article by Robin Bellamy from Torontoghosts.org on property research found here. Another option is to contact a local ghost and hauntings research group or society. We currently maintain a list of respected and trustworthy groups in Alberta. A third but often more sceptical approach is to ask a medium or psychic to take a walk around your house and to give their impressions. This method is often controversial as many psychics cannot concretely prove their legitimacy. There are however steps you can take to locate a medium in your area and to check their credentials. Once again, this last method deeply requires an open mind and respect for these special talents.
